How to use Adsense cleverly on your blog

Placing Adsense on your blog is easy. A simple copy and paste action and you’ve setup your website to make money. However, you need to know when to place Adsense ads and where to place them and how to place them. This is what divides the successful Adsense website builders from the not-so-successful Adsense website builders. You need to use Adsense cleverly on your website.

Here are my findings you can use which has worked well for me to increase your Adsense income.

There has been a lot of discussion of people throwing-up when they see Adsense on a blog. They see the blog as a vehicle to earn income from Adsense and the blog itself has no value. After seeing some awful blogs.

What you need to do is place Adsense on your blog which blends with your website. Take away those borders and change the colors. Make it look as though it is part of your website. This will lessen the preconceived notion others have with Adsense blogs

Next, you need to post regularly to your blog. I have to admit that regularly means daily. I have tests that show missing a day or two with blogging, generally affects the traffic to your blog. So get some postings ready for times when you are busy.

With good daily updated content on your blog, people will not mind that your blog has Adsense on them. You have to understand that people are looking for information. If you give them what they want, they will return and click on some Adsense ads which are of interest to them in time.
Daily blogging with good content will make people forget your blog is built for Adsense income. They will appreciate that you are making money since you are spending so much time offering them content.

I find that using horizontal Adsense ads are very effective. These are called leaderboards which span across the website. I normally place these at the top of the website so that my regular readers will see them first thing when they visit.

I also find that ad links are very effective. These are Adsense ads that only show the category of ads and have no description. They look like menu bars. People need to click on the ad link, see a list of related Adsense and click on them again before you are paid.

Though it requires 2 clicks to generate Adsense income for you, I find that this sort of ad is very effective. The good thing is Google does not count ad links towards the number of Adsense ads you can have on your website (which is 3 by the way).

Next, if you’re writing a post on your blog, make sure that you place Adsense right after you mention an interesting point. It could be the revealing of a finding or some breaking news with your niche.

The reason is that people are drawn to your content at that moment and seeing related Adsense ads beside it will help the click thru rate.

For your last Adsense ad, I would suggest placing it on the left hand side of your blog. Preferably you will have a sign up box for a newsletter or mini-course there, and place your Adsense under it

We humans read from left to right and from top to bottom. The top left portion of your blog is viewed the most when they visit your blog. Make use of this space.

Use these suggestions to place your ads and increase the Adsense clicks. They have worked for me. I suggest you test out a lot of these and see for yourself.

What if you had 10, 20, or 50 follow up messages. Now you can make money over and over again, and send your leads clicking through your content letter pages making your income explode

1. Remove the outline boxes from your ads. It sets them apart and cuts down on the flow.

Clickthrough rate (CTR) is the number of clicks an ad unit receives divided by the number of times the ad unit is shown (impressions).

Effective CPM (eCPM) is cost per 1000 impressions. From a publisher's perspective, CPM is a useful way to compare revenue across different channels and advertising programs. It is calculated by dividing total earnings by the number of impressions in thousands.

Impression is the number of times an ad is displayed on Google or on sites or products in Google's ad network. A page impression is counted each time an ad unit is displayed on a publisher's site. Page impressions are used when calculating reports for Adsense publishers, rather than ad impressions

Earnings is total money that would be given by Google Adsense for publishers who participate in their affiliate programs.

Earnings Per Click (EPC) actually is average cost per click that would be given to publishers depends on the sum of the click, page impressions and advertiser's bid. However, it's still be a Google Adsense Secret.

Calculation :

CTR = (Clicks / Impressions) * 100

EPC = Earnings Per Click

eCPM = (Earnings / Impressions) * 1000
eCPM = CTR * EPC * 10

Earnings = eCPM * Impressions / 1000

This might not be something new to you, but it's definately a good news to those AdSense beginners trying to maximize the earnings

Two weeks ago, I discovered a great site showing the MFA sites' url. I added the links to my Competitive Ad Filter since there was no url before. I check my AdSense revenue daily and found out that my earnings were increasing. Since the number of clicks were not increasing, then, I realize that by filtering MFA sites I can earn even more per click. 1) You should make your Adsense ads look as a part of your web page. They shouldn't look like an Ad. People are negative to advertising. They search the internet for content not ads. Especially for Banners - they have a less of 0.5% response. Their days are over. Imagine if you have an Adsense ad looking like the typical Banner with different colors. It will not be profitable.

Highlight Related Posts

For WordPress users there is a plugin called Related Posts that can automatically find related posts for you based on the keywords you used in the article. You can do this manually if you want, but I prefer the plugin as it is a lot easier. There may be a similar plugin for other Blog Platforms, but I am not sure about it.

Add a Newsletter or Post Notification Services

Services such Zookoda and FeedBurner can be used to notify readers of new posts via email thereby increasing page views. I think that notifying new posts through emails are more effective than feeds as people check their mails many times a day.

I have collected some of the best articles and put them on a separate page called Top Posts. This not only helps to increase pageviews but also helps in converting casual surfers to regular readers.

Write a Series of Posts

A series of posts on a topic can drive readers from the first part to the last thereby increasing pageviews. Readers will also return often to read what you have to say on the next part.

Although I suggest you don’t break every article into a series of posts as it may irritate some readers.

AdWords Changes

A lot of the complaints against AdSense over the last few months have probably got more to do with changes to AdWords than anything. Arbitrage publishers were rocked a couple of months back when changes were made to AdWords that made it more expensive to send readers to landing pages in the hope of getting them to click AdSense ads that earned more than the AdWords ads that got them there. It’s no wonder that people are complaining about AdSense as a way to Monetize Arbitrage with the changes that were made.

However if you’re not into Arbitrage and are a publisher who develops quality sites that grow a natural readership via SE traffic or loyal readers then I think AdSense is still a great way to go - particularly if you have a blog with some commercial edge to it (ie AdSense doesn’t tend to work well on religious, political or personal sites).

AdSense Alternatives

The last 12 months have seen a lot more competition for AdSense. I have noticed a slight drop off in bloggers raving about AdSense partly because they’re now raving about other ad systems.

In my chats with bloggers I’m seeing a number of other income streams mentioned again and again. Here’s a few:

1. Text Link Ads (aff) - the team at TLA have gradually built a loyal publisher list over the past few months but providing an ad system that may not be as flashy or spectacular as AdSense in some senses but which works. Interestingly - I’ve chatted with a number of smaller bloggers over the past few weeks who say that TLA actually is their biggest earner. This is because it is not reliant upon clicks or traffic at all and is a very passive income for a blog that over time grows as more advertisers buy links. I spoke to an owner of a lesser known blog network recently and he told me that his network is earning five figures a month with TLA.

2. Amazon Associates - some publishers laugh off Amazon as not being worth the effort because the payouts are so small (4-6% in post cases) but I’ve chatted with a few publishers this week who are doing very well from Amazon. The advantage of Amazon over many affiliate programs is that they are a trusted brand. If you pick the right products to promote you can actually do quite well from them. I chatted with a publisher this week who is promoting lawn mowers and power tools on Amazon. Sell a $2000 tractor/mower a few times a week and it certainly adds up.

3. Clicksor (aff) - as unpopular as they became with some publishers in their early days of launching they continue to be a big earner for some bloggers. They continue to be neck and neck with AdSense for me in the earnings they bring in. They continue to improve their products and expand what they offer in terms of channels and I know of a few product oriented bloggers who make more from them than anything else. Can’t say too much but expect their range of advertising methods to continue to increase in the coming months.

4. YPN - Yahoo’s contextual advertising system is still in beta (it has been a longer process than many expected) and is yet to fully compete with AdSense. I’ve given it a go (via b5’s account) and wasn’t too impressed with how it converted here at ProBlogger but do know of some bloggers who continue to find that it does well for them. I think it’s a blog by blog proposition but is definitely an ad network to consider if you can get into the beta test.

5. Direct Sales - another emerging trend among bloggers (and networks of them) is the increased focus upon direct deals that are being done between bloggers and sellers (and their representatives).Willing to do deals as the word gets out that blogs are online real estate that converts pretty well for them. It’s not always easy to negotiate these deals as a single blogger with a relatively small readership but we’re now seeing networks of bloggers banding together which makes it much easier to negotiate such deals.

6. Product Bloggers - while there are not a lot of examples of this yet I suspect that 2007 will be a year that quite a few bloggers will launch products in their niches. Bloggers are starting to switch onto the fact that after a year or two of blogging on a topic that they are sitting upon a goldmine of information and expertise that can be reused in other forums. While this past year saw a number of bloggers release books I know of quite a few who are working up to releasing online information products, membership sites and coaching services in their areas of expertise. Whether they succeed or not is yet to be seen but it’s a logical next step for many bloggers.

Of course there are many other AdSense Alternatives out there for publishers also (with more coming I’m told). The variety of systems open to publishers surely is having some impact upon AdSense and what people are earning with it.

AdSense Formula for Making Money

The only AdSense formula that you need to know is this:
Earnings = number of clicks * average price per click

This is what I call the Fundamental AdSense Formula because you can derive almost every AdSense "secret" directly or indirectly from this formula. Do you want to earn more with AdSense? You have two ways of doing it:

1. Increase the number of clicks, and/or

2. Increase the average price per click

Your earnings will only go up if you do one or the other, and ideally both. It's an obvious formula, yes, but it's amazing how many people lose sight of it in their quest for increased AdSense earnings.

Increasing the Number of AdSense Clicks

Increasing the number of times the ads on your site or blog are clicked is the most obvious strategy. There are two general strategies you can follow:

1. Increase the traffic to the site, and/or

2. Adjust the ads to make them more "clickable"

Getting traffic is hard and takes time, so don't look at it as a quick fix. The best way to get traffic is to provide useful, unique content and to rank highly in search engine rankings for keywords related to that content. In other words, use standard search engine optimization techniques. DO NOT "buy" traffic or use "link farms" or other dubious techniques. Other tips for getting traffic:

1. Publish articles, even free ones, with links back to your site.

2. Include a link to your site in the signature at the bottom of your emails or in any forum
postings you make (if the forum allows it).

3. Participate in forums/groups related to the content of your site or blog. The key is to
participate, not lurk, and don't just post messages promoting your site.

4. Add comments (relevant ones only, please) to other blogs, you can usually link back to yours.
(This won't help your search engine rankings, but it may allow others who are reading those
comments to find your own site.)

5. Syndicate your content (trivial if you have a blog) and make sure that the content is
registered with syndication aggregators.

6. List your site in relevant directories.

Adjusting the ads is something you can do almost immediately:

1. Position the ads on the page in order to make them more noticeable. Google even publishes a helpful heat map (see https://www.google.com/support/adsense/bin/static.py?page=tips.html ) for AdSense publishers.

2. Choose the best AdSense ad format that works for your site.

3. Change the ad colors either to make the ads blend in with your site or to make them stand out. Again, it varies depending on the site.

Whatever you do, DO NOT ENTICE VISITORS TO CLICK THE ADS. Google is very strict about this, see the AdSense program policies (found at https://www.google.com/adsense/policies ) for the details.

Increasing the Average AdSense Price Per Click

Increasing the average price per click you receive from AdSense is the other strategy for increasing your overall AdSense earnings. You can do this by:

1. Carefully targeting your content, and/or

2. Filtering out and avoiding low-paying ads

Content targeting isn't just about creating relevant, unique content. It's also making sure that that content is written to target the higher-paying keywords associated with a given topic. This means:

1. Figuring out which keyword variations for that topic pay more. Often the more specialized variations and phrases pay more than the "generic" terms.

2. Ensuring that the keyword density of the content favors the higher-paying keyword variations. See http://www.MakeEasyMoneyWithGoogle.com/vioxx-lawsuit.html for an example of well-targeted ads due to appropriate keyword density.

And to reduce the occurrence of lower-paying ads, consider these two strategies:

1. Use AdSense's competitive filter mechanism to screen out the ads that you don't want

2. Show fewer ads on a page. The fewer ads you show, the more the higher-paying ads get displayed and clicked.

Many publishers also report that their earnings increase if they remove ads completely from pages with few or no clicks. Again, the "less is more" strategy favors the higher-paying ads.

There's No Magic

As you can see, there's no magic involved to increasing your AdSense earnings. The Fundamental AdSense Formula is easy to understand, but that doesn't mean it's easy to apply the formula. It takes time and effort to do it, just like most things.

How to set up URL channels

You may have more than one sites displaying AdSense Ads for Content. You may want to see which site is performing better. To track this, you will have to set up URL channels. Then all the clicks and earnings coming from that site will be shown in the report. To set up URL channels, do the following steps:

1. Sign into your AdSense Account
2. Click the "AdSense Setup"
3. There will be 3 choices, "AdSense for Content" , "AdSense for Search and Referrals". Click
"AdSense for Content".
4. Under the AdSense Setup tab, click "Channels"
5. Click "URL channels" (See screenshot below.)
6. Click "Add new URL channels"7. In the box, enter the URL's of the sites you want to track,
one URL per line8. Then click "Add channels" and you are done.

4 Most Profitable Keywords inside AdSense system

11 Ways to Increase Blog Traffic using Feedburner

In the post Analytics for Better Optimization I told you that you can use Feedburner is a free service which also offers Feed Analytics, where you can track your traffic and other useful stuff. It would not create a feed from you from a scratch but would modify it and add it own services with it. One important point that I missed to mention was you can even use it to increase traffic to your blog, apart from just keeping an eye on it.
After you start using Feedburner you will yourself find the difference. People have almost doubled their traffic.

So now lets get to optimizing and publicizing your RSS feed to increase your Blog traffic.

Here are 11 easy and most useful ways of doing it.

1. Make you feed compatible- Some people or platforms have older version of RSS or Atom feed enabled, users of Blogger like me will be aware of this, where RSS is used more often. Don’t panic. Make your feed compatible with all feed subscription services using SmartFeed. Go to the optimize tab in FeedBurner, you’ll find a tool known as SmartFeed that will ensure maximum compatibility, and will convert it to any version the end user’s tool is asking for.

2. Explain what RSS feed is- Though it would sound odd but even today only a percentage of people who surf net know what RSS feed is, and how to use it. So, when new people click on your feed, without having one single idea about it, will know how to use it. Believe me a raw XML file is not very appealing to look at, if you are not a programming geek that is. FeedBurner knows that. All you need to do is to link the FeedBurner version of your feed rather than default. Use Browser Friendly option under Optimize tab to do it. You can even choose one of the different languages it provides and it is quite self explanatory.

3. What if your audience sends you more traffic- Nothing better than that I would say. Get your visitors spread a word about you using FeedFlare. Within the optimize tab, you will find this option. It will help you to create a community of your own around your content, and you’ll not have to touch a single line of code. Using it you will be able to provide your subscribers a way to act on your content. Now they will be able to Digg it, Del.icio.us it, email it and number of other things. Go on start spreading your content.

4.Notify all RSS and Blog tracking automatically with PingShot- Under Publicize tab, you’ll find the PingShot Service, which will save your time by automating the process and will ping all the top blog notification sites. This will be very helpful if your blog platform won’t let you to customize what services to get pinged.

5. Display your Headlines on other parts of your blog or other sites- Under Publicize tab you will find yet another cool feature, with the name of Buzz Boost. This will show part of your feed content on other parts of your site by posting a little JavaScript. This will be very useful if your blog is in a sub-directory of your site, and you want to put headlines on your Home page.

6. Catch the attention with your Headline Animator-This can again be found under Publicize tab. It is a Little Hypnotic button and it rotates headline which could be placed on your site or the forums you often visit. Clicking on the Headline will take you to the post. Something like this.

8. Feed Analytics- Though I already dedicated the last post about it but as I am talking about FeedBurner it would be hard to miss this point. Analyze your daily subscribers and daily click-through. This would help you know the time of the maximum visits of your audience to your blog and you can post accordingly.

9. Brand yourself through your feeds- Use Feed Image Burner under Optimize tab for this. Branding is so very important now a days and it is indeed fruitful to build your brand through your feeds. Include a smaller version of your logo, or even a special version just for your feed.

10. Include Media RSS Information for Yahoo Podcasts- Podcasting is the in thing today, and ofcourse if you are providing feeds for it you need to convert them to 2.0 instead, in order for the SmartCast option to work instead of the SmartFeed we talked before about. FeedBurner wi;; remind you which to pick.

11. Provide Summaries of your feed so that your subscribers visit your site to read more- Providing either full-feeds or a summary is totally upon your discretion. Providing just a summary sure will drive subscribers to your site to read the rest. After we had all the talk about how the blogging technology is evolving, content overload and getting traffic to your blogs/websites, it was inevitable to tell you that you have to track your conversion rate, your most efficient traffic source and keywords that are clicking with your audience. Remember, you cannot improve what you cannot measure and blogging is no different. This is about how to let others in the blogosphere find you and promote your content with you keeping a track of it.

Analytics have its own real advantages. Good practitioners always go for establish business models and this comes only from experience and a proper testing of different methodologies and business appeal. For business is becoming more of becoming type of open source, where improvements come from interaction and others experience, web analytics can surely boost your business than imagined if information available there is used as your business education and just not just mere facts

It is free and very easy to implement. Sign up for your account and you will get a JavaScript to insert in your website or blog coding. After this you’ll need to click on the “Check Status” button to see if the JavaScript is installed properly and Congratulations! You are done with integrating your website/blog with Google Analytics. It helps you track:-

1. Daily Number of visitors and page views- In the graph you will easily able to figure how many

visitors came to your website as well as the number of pages they saw, within the given time

frame. It will not only help you find the traffic but also the page views will help you to know

there how much content they consumed from your blog/website.
2. Geographical positioning- In what parts of the world are your visitors situated.
3. Returning/New Visits- That’s quite self explanatory.
4. Visits by source- Now that’s very important, the source of your traffic.

Google Analytics also helps you to know the bounce rates, conversion and the content summary. On which keywords did visitors searched for and came to your site/blog. You can know the placing of your site in the search engines this way. It gives you option to view as an executive, a marketer or a webmaster and has detailed options as per your choice. It also gives option to know the top entrances, top exit points and top content consumed. You will know about the sources, campaigns and last but not the least keywords, that make your blog visible to people. You can also do Goal tracking and watch your conversion rate.

1. Total no. of feeds- In given time the total no. of feeds consumed by the readers. This can be found in the dashboard option.

2. Subscribers are using which aggregator to subscribe your feed.

3. Live hits will tell you last 25 visitors visited your site in how many hours, with their location,

time of visit and user agent.

How FireFox help me with my AdSense Account

AdSense accounts can be suspended because of invalid clicks and impressions, and what is invalid clicks and impressions is completely up to them to determine. In this post, there will be many reference to opening links in new tabs in the same window, and the way to do it is to right-click on the link and chose "Open in new tab" or to just middle click on the mouse, which is the most convenient way. But not all mouse have a middle button, so if I said middle click in the post, you should now know the alternative way to do that.

I have an AdSense account as well as blogs with Blogger. I actively edit, update and publish new blogs and often have to check what I have done, or to get some information that I need for my post by checking my post. If I have made a new post and want to see the result, rather than typing in the URL into the address bar to open the blog, I middle click VIEW BLOG tab at the top of the page, and the blog will open in a new tab.

If I edit and publish a post, and want to check the post, I middle click on EDIT POST, and a list of all the posts will appear in a new tab in the same window. In that new tab, I then click on VIEW on the relevant post to open that post. Since I have to do this very frequently, the chances of such activities generating what AdSense as invalid impression is there, but my guess is that their program probably have a way of detecting from where the impressions are coming from, and impressions coming from Blogger links are probably considered as acceptable. In this way, I can do what I need to do without excessive worry about getting into problems with AdSense for invalid impressions.

I may also want to generate AdSense script and paste them into my template blog. All I have to do is to have the AdSense account opened in one tab, then in another tab in the same window, I have my Blogger account logged in and the template editor opened. I can go back and forth between the two tabs without having to lose them to do whatever necessary to get the script added to the blog.

I participate in forums often, and frequently have to refer to my post. One effective way of doing so is to use the blog sitesearch box to find the post and get the url. However, AdSense Help has indicated that while using our own searchbox is not forbidden, it is not encouraged. Thus if you want to stay on the safe side, the other way is to have the forum open in one tab, and then your Blogger account logged in in another tab, and have the EDIT POSTS opened, where there will be a list of all the posts. To find the post, click EDIT in the menu bar, then chose "Find in this page" and in the "Find" box at the bottom of the page, enter a search term known to exist on the title. It is less effective than using the sitesearch box, but is safer. When that fails, I then resort to the blog sitesearch box

Another example. I need to make a link to one of my post while preparing or editing a post, and therefore needs the URL, but I want to keep the post editor opened. One way is to use the sitesearch box to find the post, and then get the link from there. But AdSense Help has indicated that while it is not forbidden to use our own search box, it is discourage. So, to get the link I need, in FireFox, in the post editor, I right-click on EDIT POSTS and chose "Open link in new tab". I then have a full list of all the post, and to get the URL, I right-click on the relevant VIEW link and chose "Copy link location" and then go back to the previous tab where the post editor is and paste the link. Anytime I need another link, I can always go to the tab where the list of posts are and get the link there.

How can I earn from Google Adsense

You can earn from Google AdSense in three ways:

Contextual Advertisements
By placing contextual text or images ads on your sites. These ads are of two types - CPC (Cost per Clicks) ads for which you will only be paid if readers click on the ads, and CPM (Cost per 1000 impressions) for which you will be paid for just displaying the ads on your site, irrespective of whether the readers click on them or not. Although it is Cost per 1000 impressions, you don't need to reach 1000 impressions to be paid, but you would be paid proportionately for each click.

AdSense Search
You can put up to 2 AdSense search boxes on your site. They can be just for searching the Web, or they can be used for searching only the content of your site. You will not be paid for readers for using the searchbox, only if they click on any ads that may be displayed in the search result page.

Referrals
You can also earn by referring people to join AdSense or to get AdSense or Google products. You can place referral buttons or text links on your sites, and if your readers click on these, you may be paid under certain conditions. Currently, there are 4 referral products that available - Google AdSense, Google AdWords, FireFox with Google toolbar and Picasa. For Google AdSense, if your reader join AdSense via your referral button, you will be paid US100 if they manage to earn US$100 within 180 days (6 months). For Google AdWords, if your reader sign up and spend US$100 within 90 days, you will earn US$20. For FireFox with Google toolbar, if your reader download, install and runs the browser for the first time, you will be paid up to US$1 depending on their geographical location. For Picasa, when a user you've referred to Picasa downloads and runs the product for the first time, you will earn up to US$1, also depending which geographical location.

How will i be paid for it
You will be paid if in a month you earn US100 or more. If you earn less than that, you will not be paid, but the amount will be carried forward and you will be paid when the total reaches US100 or more. You will normally receive your payment by check sent to the address you registered when you apply (even if you don't live in the US). Some countries have the option of being paid by EFT (Electronic Fund Transfer) where the payment is transfered by wire, and will be faster and cost less than being paid by check.

Do i need to pay anything to Google for this
No, you do not need to pay anything to Google. However, for earnings obtained from ads via AdSense searches, some amount may be deducted for the cost of performing the search, but the amount deducted will never be more than what you earn.

Will my personal information will be kept confidential
The only information that anyone can get from the Web is your AdSense ID (which can be obtained by viewing the source code of pages which have your AdSense ads, but which will be useless to them as far as getting personal information about you.) No other personal information is displayed anywhere on the Web.

Do I need any special software
No, you don't need any software or download anything from AdSense. To participate, all you need to do is to sign into your AdSense account and generate the scripts you need to add to your site to get the AdSense products displayed.

How to make the Google AdSense searchbar and change the width, etc.

To generate the script for your Google AdSense searchbox, sign into your AdSense account and click the AdSense tab, then select AdSense for Search. You will have a choice of just a Websearch or a Websearch+Sitesearch. Click the appropriate radio button. If you chose Websearch+Sitesearch, you will then have to type in the URL of the site, and this will appear next to the radio button in the search bar itself. If you have a long URL, the width of your searchbar will be wide. See for example the sample below:

Note that the radio button for a Websearch is ticked by default. If you want your readers to search only the content of your site, you will have to tick the radio button for the sitesearch (beside the URL). I have seen searchbox with the sitesearch described as a short This site, but have not found the means to do it. I believe that is only available for premium AdSense account.The default Google AdSense search bar is often still too quite wide for the position where you want to place it in your site, but it can be changed. There are various ways to make it narrower. One is to tick "Logo above text box". See the screenshot below (click to enlarge):

To make the searchbox even narrower, tick the radio button beside "Search button below text box" (if the URL is too long, this may not work). Depending on other factors (especially if it is only a Websearch bar), changing the length of the text box to a smaller number of character can further make the searchbar narrower. See for example the sample below:

You can also change the background by using the drop-down menu, but the choice are only black, white and gray. You may have seen searchbar with other background color, but again, that is only for premium account holder.Note: sushithmn of TIPS TO MAKE MONEY BLOGGGING has this to add:On the setup wizard for AdSense for search you will see an option called {"Google search" on button} select it, then check the drop down menu for the background colors and you will see an option to "use HTML code" for background color at the end of the drop-down menu. I have tried this, and looks like if you want to have more choices of color for the background, you cannot have the Google logo on your searchbar as ticking the radio button on the "Google search on button" option will cause the Google logo to disappear from the searchbar (Note: I can understand why it is necessary for the Google logo to be missing from the searchbar as using other colors for the searchbar for the background may make the logo very ugly or even have some part of it blending into the background). The search result page opens in the same window by default, but you can choose to make it open in a new window. I believe a message saying the author has selected safesearch is also added to the searchbar, and this may increase the likelihood of people who are sensitive about such matters.After you have made your choice, you will be taken to a page where you can customize the logo and style of your search results pages to match your site, choose a country or territory to determine which Google domain will be used for search results, choose SafeSearch so that sites and web pages containing adult themed and explicit sexual content are excluded from web search results and specify a custom channel to track the performance of this search box. Clicking CONTINUE will take you to a page with a box containing the script for the search bar. Just click inside the box, and the whole script will be highlighted. Right-click and select copy (or ctrl+A) and paste into the template of your site.

Note: The one thing you CANNOT do is to alter the script yourself to get what you want. It can get your account suspended.

AdSense and many other AdSense publishers have said to get the best CTR (Click Through Rate), it is best to blend the ads to the color of the site. I don't know about the effect of usage of a background color of a searchbar, but one thing is for sure, blending the colors will make your site look better

To get a better looking AdSense search box, it is important to blend the background color of your searchbox to your site. To do this, first you will have to determine what colors on your site you want the background of searchbox to blend with. For this, you obviously need to know the color code of the color on your site. For this task, the tool ColorPic will be of great help to you. You can download and install ColorPic at ColorPic, the versatile color picker. (Close the new window to get back to this page) With this tool, you can get the HTML color code or RGB value of any color you put your mouse on. You will need to get the codes of two colors you want to blend with.

Now that you know the color you want to blend with, this tool, Color Blender, will help you. There is nothing to download. Just go to the site Color Blender (close new window to get back to this page). Enter the first color code into the first box, and the second color in the second box and choose the number of mid-points you want to be displayed for you to choose. For example, I have entered the code #FF6602 into the first box, and the color #FF00CC into the second box and I have chosen 2 mid-points. I click blend, and Color Blender will give the suggestions for the 2 colors (#FF4445 and #FF2289) that will blend with the 2 colors I have chosen. See screenshot below:

What is the best template to use for AdSense

Someone asked a question in the comments section of my blog Blogger Tips and Tricks (close new window to get back to this page), "What is the best template to use for AdSense". I think that is relevant to this blog. Rather than typing a post all over again, I think I will just post my response:

That is a hard question to answer.

There are so many factors to take into consideration. For example, if there are not still 10-20% of visitors using small screen (600x800 screen resolution) to this blog, I would use a 3 column template. (How do I know that?

I use statcounter, a hit counter which give quite a bit of statistics about my visitors, but which doesn't give private information if any visitors to my site is worried about that).

If you happen to be using Blogger Beta, then go to Blogger Beta: Adding advertisement, hit counters, etc.. (Close new window to get back to this page).

The reason why I don't want to use a 3 column template for this blog is because if I change to a 3 column template, depending on the design of the template, visitors with 800x600 resolution will either have to scroll to see the rest of the page, or the appearance of the site will change to something I, and especially my visitors, may not like.

This may put off my visitors and may discourage them from coming back again.

Why do I prefer a 3 column template? With a 3 column template, I can put more stuff above above the fold, the part of the page which a visitor first see without having to scroll when they first get to your site. That is the best place to put your ads.

It also enable me to put, for example, my ads on the left sidebar, and the profile, Previous Posts, Archives, link list, etc on the right sidebar, or to put some referral buttons right at the top of the right sidebar if I want good visibility for that.

How to set up URL channels

You may have more than one sites displaying AdSense Ads for Content. You may want to see which site is performing better. To track this, you will have to set up URL channels. Then all the clicks and earnings coming from that site will be shown in the report. To set up URL channels, do the following steps:

1. Sign into your AdSense Account
2. Click the AdSense Setup
3. There will be 3 choices, AdSense for Content, AdSense for Search and Referrals. Click AdSense for Content.
4. Under the AdSense Setup tab, click "Channel"
5. Click "URL channels"
6. Click "Add new URL channels"
7. In the box, enter the URL's of the sites you want to track, one URL per line8. Then click "Add channels" and you are done.

After that, you don't need to do anything, even when generating the scripts for your ads. You don't need to select the URL channel. You only have to select channels if you are using Custom channels

Generating AdSense script including custom channel

A reader of this blog asked about custom channel. I thought that it would be good to make a post on how to generate AdSense script and include in it creating custom channels to answer. So, here it is:

To generate the script, the first thing you have to do is to sign into your AdSense account. Once you are logged in, the first thing you see will be your report. Above the report will be a tab "AdSense Setup" (see screenshot below )

Click on that tab and you will be presented with another page with 3 choices - AdSense for Content, AdSense for Search, and Referrals. (Click on screenshot )

If you want to generate text and/or image ads, click on the "AdSense for Content". You will be again taken to a page with 2 choices - Ad Unit and Link Unit. (Click on screenshot )

Rather than uploading another sceenshot to show what an ad unit is, I will refer to what you can see in this blog. I use a 3 column template, and I have chosen to display a Skyscrapper Ad Unit on the left sidebar and a link unit under the Header. Right under the Header, you will see a link unit displaying most probably 5 text links. A link unit is a real space saver as it takes up so little space. You can chose either by clicking the appropriate radio button. Let's say, you want an ad unit. You can just tick the radio button against "Ad Unit" and click Continue at the bottom of the page. If you want only text ads or only image ads, you will have to click the down arrow in the drop-down menu and select your choice. In my case, I have chosen both text ads and banner (this is the default), so you may see either text ads or a banner in the left sidebar.

Link units are useful when you do not want ads on your site to appear intrusive by having prominent ads. For an example, look at the link unit at this site Testing Blogger Beta (close new window to get back to this page). The link unit is just below the header and does not take up much space. The space above the fold (the part of the screen which a visitor see without having to use the vertical scrollbar) is valuable real estate, and you would want to maximise the use of that space. That ad unit is obtained by selecting the 728x15 format. There are other formats and which format would depend on where you want to place the link unit. You will not get anything if someone click on a link, but if they click on an ad in the resulting page, then you will be credited for that click. Some people have reported good results with the use of link units.

Assuming that you have selected Ad unit, you will be taken to another page with a number of choices. First, you need to select the format, and the format you choose will have to fit into the space that you intend it to display. For the one in the left sidebar in this blog, I chose the 160x600 Wide Skyscraper. For the link unit below the header, I chose the 728x15 ad format and chosen to display 5 ads per unit.

Choosing colorsThe next step is to choose the color for your ads background, text, border, etc. You may choose to do nothing and just click continue, and the colors used will be the default blue1. If you want to blend the colors with the colors of your site, you will have to edit the palette. If you wish, you can just select the color direct by typing in the HTML color code or clicking on the color box next to the relevant item, but it will mean that each time you do another ad and you want back the same color scheme, you will have to go through the whole process again. It is better to click EDIT PALETTE, then choose the color, and then save the palette under an suitable title. (See screenshot below. Click to enlarge)

This unfortunately, will mean that you will have to start the process described above all over again. But it willl have the advantage that each time you want to generate another ad unit or link unit, you can just select it from the drop-down menu. To aid you in selecting the color for the ads, I suggest you get the free ColorPic from Iconico (close new window/tab to return to this page).

You also have a choice of whether to display PSA (Public Service Advertisements) for which you do not get any credit for clicks, show non-Google ads from another URL or just fill the space with a solid color when there are no suitable ads in the pool to display on your site. I myself have chosen PSA, however the choice is completely up to the individual.

Setting up custom channelsOnce you are satisfied with your choices above, you click "continue" and will be taken to the next page to add/select custom channels. Custom channels are a tool you can use to view more detailed reports about the performance of specific pages and ad units. This is to help you track the performance of your ad units. With custom channels, you can experiment with different color palette, different ad format, different placement, and if you see a particular channel not doing well, you may change it to see if you do better. This is called Optimization. You play around with different color palettes, ad formats, placements, etc. until you find one that give you the best performance. To add a custom channel, you click "Add new channel" if you have not created any channel before, or if you want channel not in the list of channels already created. You can create/choose up to 5 custom channels for an individual ad unit. See screenshot below (click to enlarge):

After you have made your choices, you click continue and you will be taken to a page where you can copy the script generated to paste in your template. You just click on the inside of the box and the whole of the script will be highlighted, and you just right-click and select "Copy" (or ctrl+C), then paste in the relevant place in your template. How to ensure your AdSense account will not be cancelled

Since more and more publishers are worried about being suspended from AdSense, and it seems like even more publishers claim they "didn't know" the rules because they didn't read the terms and/or policies, the AdSense team has created a brand new top ten list of what to do (and not to do!) to ensure your AdSense account remains in good standing.

The quick rundown of the top ten, as well as some of my personal comments in italics with each:

Don't click your own ads I have been saying this ever since AdSense launched. It is amazing how many people don't realize this is a problem even if they are "truly interested" in what is being advertised.

Don’t ask others to click on Google ads Again, you'd think this was obvious, but not the the publisher I saw a few months ago with a huge 250x500 pixel image reminding visitors to click at least three ads a day, or else their free access to the site might be gone the following day.

Don’t employ pop-up prompts or automatic software installations Sneaky pop-ups containing AdSense or reminders to click the ads have been hitting the radar recently.

Be aware of how your site is promoted This seems to be reminding those publishers who are utlizing spyware to promote their site with AdSense ads as being against the AdSense terms and policies.

Don’t place Google ads on sites that contain prohibited content I still see AdSense showing up on adult or gambling sites these days.

Respect Google trademarks Reminding publishers who are utlizing Google logos etc about their brand guidelines.

Don’t tamper with the AdSense code It is always amazing how frequently people change the javascript yet don't realize it is against the AdSense terms.

Provide a positive user experience Someone should remind the publisher who bombaded me with eight popups, a full complement of Google ads and about two sentences of keyword spam content on the page.

Provide a good environment for advertisers About creating pages advertisers would be happy to see their ads appearing on.

Be responsive If Google emails you with an account or policy issue, respond ASAP :)

am telling you with my practical experience that nothing would work unless you are prepared to go that extra mile. You should get hold of the adsense secrets that are unique to your site. You must be prepared to make continuous changes and measure effectiveness on a continuous basis.

Following are simple but effective steps successfully followed by the author, which may help you to improve your adsense earnings by five folds or even more! However, keep in mind that nothing would work unless you customize these options to suit your requirements

What is Your Ad Size? - Highly effective Ad formats are 336x250 and 768x120. However, it is up to you to find out the best size for your site. These are the widely tested and accepted sizes. Tyr them out and see the outcome.

Be Discreet - I personally don't prefer to server image ads in my Adsense campaigns because they dilute the effectiveness of the Ads. Tear Down the Borders

Remove borders on your AdSense ads. Web visitors eyes wander around the screen; borders stop them from wandering.

Use Matching Fonts

Match the font of your site content to the fonts of your AdSense ads.

Use Matching Colors

There are many factors that govern how much money you can make. These can be sumarized in the following equation. Although not all of the factors are equal, you need to make sure that you work on all of them:

Google Adsense Revenue = Traffic Levels × High Paying Ads × Ad Position × Relevant Ads × Ad Design

Traffic Levels:
It seems simple enough - the more traffic that you get, the more chance that somebody will click on an advert. Try and write some pillar articles that get high on search results for certain keywords. Also, try to get Slashdotted. Having an article Slashdotted will bring a day of seriously high traffic (hope your server can cope). A lot of image ads and site-targeted ads as well as text ads are CPM. This means that your are paid for each time the advert is viewed. Having regulars is important as well, so write GREAT CONTENT.

High Paying Ads:
Obviously, the more paid for an ad, the more you get. You need keyword targeting! You might like to follow the AdWords set up and see what sort of prices are paid for certain keywords. You need to select a high-paying topic (about technology not toothpicks!). Also, make sure you sign up for image ads which have a larger CPC. Have a go - it's mainly trial and error and won't be easy.

Ad Position:
Don't hide your ads! Make them close by. You have the choice of where to place your Google AdSense ads. Put them in text flow or at the end of long articles

Relevant Ads:

Don't touch your AdSense code. Not unless you definitely know you aren't going to mess anything up. Really. Especially don't add any premium keyword features (for massive publishers like Amazon) as these mean instant blockage

Don't label ads with "Click Me". Or anything else. The only labels you are allowed are "sponsored links" or "advertisements"

Don't obscure ads. All text must be visible (no messed up colours) and they mustn't be in hidden DIVs or frames or whatever.

Don't try and trick Google. They are clever and also they have your money.

No Google ads alongside pr0n, gambling or illegal stuff

Make sure your page is never loaded inside an unrequested popup

No Google AdSense ads in emails. Also no error pages or thank you pages

Google's been busy recently adding new Referral options to its Google AdSense program. Referrrals are affiliate links that instead of being PPC - Pay Per Click, you get paid for getting the user to do something like download a program. Now, instead of just buttons, you can have link referrals. These blend more easily with your site and can be integrated with your site content and styled however you like. However, AdSense still has a high level of control. You still have to place JavaScript ad code in the page and cannot change the text of the link.Also, there are some new referral programs. As well as the original AdSense, AdWords and Firefox, you now have Picasa and Google Packs. New ad colours have been added, but you need to choose US English to get them.However, I'm not sure that you do that well with referrals as the conversion is quite hard or underpaid.

It's a good additional source of income but it won't earn you loads unless you are good at pushing the AdSense referral. I've been having a go with some of the new links and buttons and have seen a definite increse in CTR - Click Through Rate and conversion rates

I use Commission Junction which has the eBay.co.uk affiliate program (GBP 7 for a new user, GBP0.10 for a bid) and the eBay.com ($0.20 for winning bid). Also, there are a few other nice affiliate programs but I'm not too impressed. The Amazon.co.uk associates program is really good. I wrote one review for a product, put an Amazon link on it and had a sale almost instantly with about 7%. Just you don't want a small amount of money in loads of accounts because that way you'll never get paid!

Adwords -

This is a program which advertisers use to market their website. When you do a Google search engine search, you will see some white blocks of adverts on the right hand side. These are called Google Adwords

Adwords are charged on a pay per click basis. So if I have a website on selling Google Adsense website templates, then I would setup an Adword account and pay for my advert to appear when related searches are done. I would probably pay 50 cents per click. If 10 people clicks on my Adwords then I will have paid 5 dollars for my advertising campaign.

Adwords can be spread to other areas other than Google’s search engines. They can appear on people’s websites. These are sort of similar to Adswords layout but they are called Adsense. Google Adsense can be customized to look differently and blend in with your website which is one of the major difference with Adwords.

Once you have created your website with keyword rich articles on them, the next step is to place Adsense on them after you have good traffic to your website. However, you have to consider the Google Adsense layouts to maximize your profits. Just because people see Adsense on your website does not mean, they need to click on them.

By the way, don’t you hate clicking on things that you know are adverts? It’s human nature and we are now so bombarded with ads that the thought of us being sold something is a big turn off. If you have a blog, you would place the Adsense right at the top of the webpage rather than further down where the reader will have to scroll. This place is called “the fold”. It is basically the part of the website which is visible without scrolling.

Check your Google Adsense performance

Once you know what your Google Adsense sites topic will be about you can start to explore the keywords used and also create original articles – note the word original. This is because Google loves fresh content. If your articles are the same old stuff found everywhere, Google will not place that much of an importance on your website.

We are trying to increase the rate at which visitors to your website click on your website. Increasing the CTR of your visitors by 1% is enough to be happy about. Don’t believe me?

Google Adsense layouts are one of the performance fine tuning art you should continually work on to improve. Improving your Google Adsense layouts will increase the size of Google’s check to you every month. It’s that important.

Google has added a lot of new options to the layout code over the past year. What we must do is strenuously test and see what is the most effective. Notice I said “we”. This is because what is effective for my website may not be effective for you website. Unless of course the colours and topics of our websites are the same.

John Reese, probably one of the most famous and well respected internet marketers said that testing is the key to online success. He even advises people not to take his words as the bible but to do their own testing. What works for him does not necessarily work for you

Monitor the changes you make to your Google Adsense layout and see the difference in your rankings, traffic and earnings. The great thing about the internet is that if offers detailed metrics such as number of visitors, click thru rates, the time the visitors arrive and how long they stay on the webpage. This data is amazing and is only available on the internet. Think about people advertising in newspapers and magazines. They don’t have half the luxury we do.

Placing the Google Adsense blocks

Are your Google Adsense sites optimized to attract the most clicks on your Adsense? As I mentioned earlier on, the more Google Adsense sites you have, the more profits you are likely going to have. One of your websites may hit a home run – you never know.One of the techniques I advise you to use on your Google Adsense sites is to put a 250×250 Adsense block in the horizontal center of your page. Make this appear high up on your webpage and make it visible without the need to scroll down (above the fold). Then hide the border of the Adsense. By hiding, I mean change it to the colour which matches the background of your website. This will make it look less like a Google Adsense site and visitors will more likely click on it

Making the ads look like an integral part of your Google Adsense sites is important. Though the visitors find the ads description useful, they won’t click on them because they look like ads. The people now just hate to be sold.

Therefore make sure the color scheme for your ads in the same as your website. Always remember Google’s TOS (Terms of service) – you can only place 3 ads on one page.

The design of my Google Adsense sites are normally one in the top middle of the page above the fold, a left side skyscraper, and another skyscraper in the middle of the article. If it’s a blog, I’ll place it as a banner at the bottom of the page.

When to open a Google Adsense account?

The beginner’s guide to Google Adsense cannot be complete without mentioning the steps to open an Adsense account. What a lot of people do not understand is that the website has to be up and running before Google will approve of your Adsense account.

Application of a Google Adsense account is not the first step for my beginner’s guide to Google Adsense. Creating the website or installing a blog depending on how you want to place the Adsense is the first step

Once the website is created, make sure that it is search engine optimized (SEO) and that good content is written and uploaded. The content should mention relevant keywords and have the correct “keyword density”. This means that a keyword should appear on 3% of the article

For example, if your content is 100 words then the keyword should be mentioned 3 times. Once the content is ready, you can apply for a Adsense account at http://www.google.com/adsense

Applying for an Adsense account is not immediate. You need to wait for a few days before being approved. One of the things they will ask you for is your website URL. So make sure your website is ready before applying for an Adsense account.

Wordpress is the blog for advertising Google Adsense

I use Wordpress for my blog advertising Google Adsense. It is a software I am familiar with and good at. It is relatively easier to get traffic to a blog than a normal website so it is my ideal way of using it to place Google Adsense.

Wordpress can be downloaded from the URL http://www.wordpress.orgInstallation is a breeze but prior to that you must know how to setup MYSQL databases with your cpanel. Wordpress provides the instructions for this so it is quite straight forward.

Google Adsense layouts are quite easy to change which is good news for those who hate messing around with complex coding. When you log into your Google Adsense account, there is an interface where you can modify the appearance of your Adsense. The great thing about this tool is that you can see what your Adsense will look like as you modify the settings. After that it is just a copy and pasting of the code to your website.

Once you log into your Adsense account, go to the tab Adsense setup. There are 3 options which you can choose. You need the link “Adsense for content”.

For the ad unit, you can choose if your Adsense shows image or text or image and text. You can also choose link unit, where it offers a list of topics which further displays relevant Adsense for the topics chosen However, note that you will not get paid for click on the ad units

Further on, you can choose the color of the text in the Adsense shown, the color of the URL and the header, the border color of the Adsense block, and essentially the format of the size of your Google Adsense.

You need to spend some time here playing around with the Google Adsense layout before choosing the one which looks right on your website.

Getting your Google Adsense account closed

It is very tempting to click on your Google Adsense sites and earn some money from Google. However, the advice is DON’T!!! One of the policies you agreed upon when signing up for the Google Adsense account is that you will not click on your own ads which is regarded as defrauding Google and the advertisers.

Google has a monitor system in place where it can detect if the clicks are coming from the own publisher and if there is any suspicous amount of clicking on the Adsense. Google is an intelligent system so don’t try and beat it. This relates to trying black hat techniques in ranking high on its search engine as well.

It is no surprise therefore that you do not see many people giving you examples of their Google Adsense sites especially when it is making money. People will copy the idea or worst, click on the Adsense and cause the publisher’s account to be closed by Google.

Modify your own Adsense website

Check Different Formats of Google Adsense

A beginner’s guide to Google Adsense will not be complete without knowing what the various sizes are available for your Adsense

The Adsense ad units come in a variety of sizes. You will see these terms mentioned a lot in forums or in guides. Here is a list of them.

Leaderboard
This is horizontal and contains around 3 or more Adsense ads across the unit. Leaderboards are generally very eye catching and should be placed near the top of your website and/or near the bottom of your website. These ads go across the screen so it attracts the visitor’s eye.

Banner
These are like Leaderboard ads but you can limit them to 2 Adsense ads. These can be placed in the middle of your content which catches the visitor’s attention when they are reading your content

Skyscraper
These are like the Adwords which appear on the right hand side of Google’s search results. They are normally placed on the left or right hand side of the webpage. It is a good idea to have some navigational menus on the side of your webpage and then to place a skyscraper Adsense below it.

Having a blog advertising Google Adsense is easier than having a static website. But I did not say it is easy. Only easier compared to updating a static website.

A lot of people thinks that once they setup a blog post a few articles, then slap on some Google Adsense and the money will roll in. Nope sorry. Not that easy. This is not The Field of Dreams – “Build it and they will come.”

A blog is useful for getting your Google Adsense income but it needs work. It needs a lot of work at first. Once established you can relax a bit. Here’s in a nutshell the initial steps when setting up a blog and getting traffic to it.Once Wordpress is installed on your web host, make a posting to your blog every regularly. Right from the start. You should aim to post at least once a day for the first 2 weeks. This will make the search engines take notice of your blog.

You can see how many items they have sold and also other buyer’s feedback on them. Needless tosay, stay away from people who have not sold many items and who have received negative feedback recently.

Next thing you should check is the actual Google Adsense site. Check to see if it has page rank and also check all the pages on the website to make sure that Adsense does indeed appear on them. Some seller’s will disable the Adsense code

Next thing you should check are the content. Run it via copyscape.com and you will see if it has taken content from other sites or it has its own original content. Website with their own original content are worth a lot more.

Google Adsense formats 2

Let’s continue with the different formats of Adsense in our regular beginners guide to Google Adsense section.

SquareGoogle Adsense now has their sizes in squares. This new addtion is a breath of fresh air for Adsense publishers. The original sizes such as Leaderboard and Skyscraper are now very common. When visitors see them, they know they are Google Adsense straight away. Of course, this feeling will decrease the CTR of the Adsense. Not good news for us.

Squares are more original and test have shown that people notice them more and CTR have shown an increase. You need to place these squares in place of Leaderboard and Skyscraper and see what the performance is like. As I mentioned before, do not count on other people’s test results. Test the new Adsense sizes yourself so that you can be sure of its effectiveness.

Google provides various sizes for these squares so there’s lots of things that will keep you busy testing with.

Image Ads I have tested Image ads which basically show an image instead of text. These will make the Adsense look like banners and the results for my sites vary. I guess this will depend on the market you are in. For example, with wrestling sites, I find that the images convert better than normal Adsense text.

Video Ads This is very new at the time of this writing and there is not many videos in Google’s inventory that shows these Adsense.
